If you’ve ever worked with a video producer — or thought about hiring one — you might be wondering what we actually do.
Most people assume it’s just turning up with a camera, pressing record, then sending over a file a few days later.
But the truth is, the filming itself is only a small part of the process. The real value of a video producer is in everything that happens before and after the shoot — helping you figure out what to say, how to say it, where to film it, and how to turn it into content that actually works for your business.
So in this post, I want to break down what I actually do for clients — and why having a producer on board makes all the difference.
1. Strategy & Planning
FAQ I get a lot: “Where do we even start?”
This is often where people get stuck. They know they want a video — but they’re not sure what it should be, who it’s for, or what it needs to say.
That’s where the first part of my job comes in.
We’ll have a discovery call where I’ll dig into what you’re trying to achieve. Is it about building trust? Driving sales? Recruiting new franchisees? Launching a product?
From there, I help shape the story — sometimes I joke that I’m part video therapist, part strategist. We figure out the angle, tone, and structure before we even touch a camera.
2. Pre-Production
FAQ: “Do I need a script?”
Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. It depends on the format — but either way, I make sure you’re prepared.
This is where the planning really kicks in. I’ll scout or recommend filming locations, create a rough schedule for the day, sort out questions if we’re doing interviews, and plan any cutaway footage (B-roll) we might need to support the story.
By the time we get to filming, everything’s lined up to run smoothly. No awkward pauses, no “What do we do now?” moments. Just clarity and confidence.
3. Filming Day
FAQ: “Is it awkward being on camera?”
It can be — but that’s part of my job too.
I create a relaxed, professional setup so you can focus on telling your story. I’ll guide you through it, prompt where needed, and make sure we capture everything we need — efficiently and comfortably.
I also shoot with the edit in mind. That means getting multiple angles, soundbites that’ll work well on social, and making sure there’s enough content for all the different platforms.
In one shoot, you might walk away with:
-
A long-form YouTube video
-
Several short clips for Instagram or LinkedIn
-
A podcast version of the conversation
-
Cutaways for your website or landing pages
4. Post-Production
FAQ: “How long does editing take?”
This varies depending on the project — but it’s where your raw footage becomes something purposeful and polished.
I’ll cut for clarity and pacing, clean up audio, add music, motion graphics, subtitles, your brand colours — everything it needs to look sharp and feel on-brand.
I also deliver content in formats that are ready to go — whether it’s a square clip for Instagram, a widescreen banner video for your website, or an MP4 reel with hardcoded captions.
Editing isn’t just about stitching clips together — it’s about shaping your message and making it land.
5. Distribution & Repurposing
FAQ: “Where should I post my video?”
A lot of the time, clients don’t know where to start with getting the most out of their video. So I’ll help with that too — whether it’s advice on platforms, best practices for social, or repurposing one video into multiple clips.
Sometimes I manage the content for them. Sometimes I hand over everything in an easy-to-use format and they run with it.
Either way, the goal is the same: make sure your video reaches the right people and does its job.
So… What Does a Video Producer Actually Do?
I help you figure out what to say, how to say it, and how to get it out into the world — in a way that fits your business, your goals, and your style.
It’s not just about making a video. It’s about making the right video — and making it work hard for your brand.
